                    UTICA - At a special ceremony today at Munson in Utica, New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-C-Rome, presented New York State Senate Commendation Awards to several residents of the 53rd Senate District.
Commendations are one of the highest honors that the Senate can use to recognize individuals who have served and made lasting contributions to their community and the state throughout their careers or lives.
Those honored included:
John DePerno, a 101-year-old who proudly served in the United States military during World War II and is a community leader, business owner and well-known in the hospitality industry.
Willie Talmadge, a respected civil rights and community advocate and leader.
Hawa Peters, the founder and executive director of the Utica Royalties, a nonprofit organization committed to empowering underserved children and teens in Utica through education, mentorship, arts and wellness programs.
Vincent Scalise, a decorated military member, founder and executive director of the Utica Center for Development and advocate for area veterans and their families.
James Simpson, a retired New York State Trooper who supports several charitable and community causes in the area.
Ron Moshier, a highly regarded and accomplished local sports journalist.
The late Michael Bosak, a historic preservationist, community advocate and architect who was instrumental in the preservation of buildings in Oneida County.
Carl Trainor, a local businessman, community supporter and longtime volunteer and organizer for the annual Boonville-Oneida County Fair.
Joleen Ferris, a respected and accomplished journalist with WKTV.
Monica Bravo, a dedicated teacher at Thomas R. Proctor High School.
Paul Buckley, City of Utica Film Commissioner and advocate for the arts.
Jennifer Boulanger, a passionate writer and educator who is dedicated to empowering women and supporting the LGBTQ and refugee communities.
Elizabeth Boise, a strong supporter of military members and their families.
Mark Donovan, president of the Boilermaker Road Race and a highly regarded leader in the community.
Greg and Jill Robinson, owners of the iconic Unadilla MX facility in New Berlin who prioritize showcasing and celebrating the region to a local, national and international audience and giving back to their community.
Joseph and Tricia Rutkowski, accomplished business owners and philanthropists.
Terri DiNitto, a farmer and agriculture advocate.
Canastota resident Anthony Graziano, a 103-year-old World War II veteran and a legend in boxing and the restaurant industry, was unable to attend the ceremony but was also recognized.
Honorees received a personalized plaque and commendation coin as part of the ceremony.
“These honorees are certainly worthy of recognition,” Sen. Griffo said. “They have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to helping others and have worked selflessly to improve the wellbeing of area residents, children, families, schools and communities. Each has truly made a difference and should be applauded and commended for their efforts.”
